CYCLING

CAUTLEY SPOUT
​
England’s highest waterfall is just a few minutes drive away. The falls at "Cautley Spout" tumble down a series of drops totalling 180m, into the valley of Cautley Holme Beck. It’s a spectacular site and can be enjoyed as part of a 2.5 mile circular walk from The Cross Keys Temperance Inn. Get there early though as the small parking area fills up quite quickly.
EDEN VIADUCTS​

Walks - Eden Viaducts Take a walk and explore the Podgill, Merrygill and Smardale Gill viaducts that are an important part of our Victorian industrial heritage. The viaducts are located near the market town of Kirkby Stephen. The viaducts were all part of the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway network. Footpaths go across the top of the viaducts and the Smardale Gill footpath passes through the Cumbria Wildlife Trusts nature reserve, an ancient church and priory and beautiful meadows. LOWTHER CASTLE​

Lowther castle has something for everyone, it boasts one of the largest adventure playgrounds in the country, the castle itself, gardens, Exhibitions, walk and cycle trails, and of course somewhere to eat and drink and rest before your next adventure in the grounds. RHEGED CENTRE​
​
Rheged - Rheged Centre Fun for all the family and a good place for a rainy day the Rheged centre boasts a cinema, an art gallery, shops and a café. A 30 minute drive from The Green on the outskirts of Penrith.
OUTDOOR POOLS

FISHING
​
There’s trout fishing nearby on both still water and river, for the very experienced to the beginner, including instruction.
Bessy Beck Trout Fishery offers still water trout fly fishing; tackle hire and tuition from basic to advanced are available. Just 3 miles away, a number of our guests have taken their children to Bessy Beck for a first taste of fishing, and a first taste of fresh caught trout for dinner afterwards!

The River Eden offers fly fishing for trout and grayling and the Kirkby Stephen and District Angling Association (KSDAA)

GOLF

If your info your golf and fancy a round there are variety of courses nearby.
Ravenstonedale has its own 18-hole 9 green small golf course and is just a few minutes from your front door. Riverside is a unique 18-hole, 9 green, small course specialising in par-3 short holes which is open to visitors who are not members of other clubs.

Further afield there are courses at Sedbergh, Appleby, Kendal, Penrith, Kirkby Lonsdale, Casterton and Barnard Castle. In Penrith there is Penrith Golf Hub including an all-weather Driving Range.
OTHER ACTIVITIES

Activities on water, from paddle boarding to learning to sail on Ullswater there are plenty of different ways to explore on the water and various companies who can help guide you.

Another piece of history to explore in the local area dating back to 1092 the ruins of brough castle are as intriguing as its history. Just a 20 minute drive from The Green.
